Summary |
0001842: The phrase "The…utility shall conform to the Utility Syntax Guidelines…" is never used normatively |
Description |
XCU Section 1.4 states:Each OPTIONS section that uses the phrase "The...utility shall conform to the Utility Syntax Guidelines..." refers only to the use of the utility as specified by this volume of POSIX.1-2024; implementation extensions should also conform to the guidelines, but may allow exceptions for historical practice. However, the standard never uses the phrase "The...utility shall conform to the Utility Syntax Guidelines..." in the intended context, with the possible exception of the sccs description (page 3349, lines 113847-113849). This is probably because cross-references are generated dynamically; in the PDF version, utility descriptions generally sayThe...utility shall conform to XBD Section 12.2 (on page 215)... while in the HTML version they sayThe...utility shall conform to XBD 12.2 Utility Syntax Guidelines..." This discrepancy may confuse readers of the PDF version in particular. |
Desired Action |
On page 2462, lines 79697-79698, changeEach OPTIONS section that uses the phrase "The...utility shall conform to the Utility Syntax Guidelines..." toEach OPTIONS section that uses the phrase "The...utility shall conform to XBD Section 12.2 (on page 215)..." using the same cross-referencing method that is used elsewhere in the standard. This should keep the quoted text synchronized and improve the consistency of the HTML version as well. |
