Summary |
0001886: Conflicting statements about '-' as an operand |
Description |
The text about '-' under OPERANDS in Utility Description Defaults does not match syntax Guideline 13 in XBD 12.2, which says:For utilities that use operands to represent files to be opened for either reading or writing, the '-' operand should be used to mean only standard input (or standard output when it is clear from context that an output file is being specified) or a file named -.
|
Desired Action |
Change:If an operand naming a file can be specified as '-', which means to use the standard input instead of a named file, this is explicitly stated in this section. Unless otherwise stated, the use of multiple instances of '-' to mean standard input in a single command produces unspecified results. to:If an operand naming a file to be opened for either reading or writing can be specified as '-' and the meaning of such an operand is not as stated in Guideline 13 in [xref to XBD 12.2], this is explicitly stated in this section. Unless otherwise stated, for utilities where '-' as an operand means to use the standard input, the use of multiple instances of '-' as operands in a single command produces unspecified results.
