Summary0000271: The first sentence of this paragraph is ambiguous.
Description The following sentence is ambiguous:

"The last process to close a terminal device file shall cause any
output to be sent to the device and any input to be discarded."

 This can mean two things:

 - `any output to be sent' and `any input' shall be discarded.
 - `any output` will be sent and `any input' shall be discarded.

I know the BSD's will perform draining (`sending') on closure.
Desired Action I guess using the following sentence would be clear enough:

"The last process to close a terminal device file shall cause any
output to be sent to the device, but any input to be discarded."

The `but' will emphasize there is a difference between input and output.

Interpretation response
------------------------
The standard is unclear on this issue, and no conformance distinction can be made between alternative implementations based on this. This is being referred to the sponsor.

Rationale:
-------------
None.

Notes to the Editor (not part of this interpretation):
-------------------------------------------------------
Change the text to:

"The last process to close a terminal device file shall cause any
output to be sent to the device and shall cause any input to be discarded."

This is on XBD6 P192, L6818-6819 and on XBD7 P205, L6710-6711.
